Ellaryn has put her painful past behind her by working as a horseminder for a hero-for-hire. She loves seeing the world while tending Hector fon Hartschadel’s zaldi stallion during his quests. But when they travel, she can’t avoid her coworker Paxon, who two months ago gave her an erotic night to remember and then abruptly rejected her.
Paxon has been serving Hector as cook, valet, and general dogsbody for almost ten years, paying off the life debt his younger brother incurred from the hero. He cares for Ellaryn, but Hector frowns on fraternization, so a relationship with her might risk her job. The job becomes personal when a plague strikes the city of Everford, afflicting Paxon’s brother. Now Paxon and Ellaryn must help Hector retrieve a magical chalice that could provide a cure. But when the hero’s quest goes awry, the former lovers must risk their lives—and hearts—if they’re to save the plague’s victims before time runs out.
